Smart film vs. smart glass.
Both can create switchable privacy, but they begin with different glass conditions and carry different fabrication, wiring and installation scopes.
| Decision point | Smart film | Smart glass |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Suitable existing glass | New or replacement glazing opening |
| Construction | Surface-applied switchable PDLC layer | Fabricated laminated glazing assembly |
| Typical fit | Retrofit rooms and partitions | New construction, remodels and replacement glass |
| Edges and wiring | Field-finished busbar, trim and cable route | Coordinated during glass fabrication and installation |
| Privacy behavior | Clearer energized state; frosted privacy state | Technology-dependent; PDLC commonly uses similar privacy states |
| Important limit | Residual haze; privacy is not blackout | Product-dependent haze; frame and fabrication constraints |
| Cost drivers | Area, seams, controls, wiring, prep and access | Glass make-up, fabrication, freight, frames, controls and access |
Start with the opening, not the product name
If suitable glass is already installed and should remain, retrofit film deserves assessment. If the opening is new, damaged, incorrectly configured or being rebuilt, a fabricated smart-glass assembly may be the cleaner path.
Separate privacy switching from solar tinting
PDLC privacy products scatter light to obscure detail. Electrochromic and SPD products modulate tint and solar transmission through different mechanisms. Availability and performance must be confirmed in the actual specification; the labels are not interchangeable.
Ask to see the real states
Evaluate a physical sample under lighting similar to the room. Look from an angle, check haze in the clearer state, and test the privacy state with a person and bright light behind it. Neither category should be sold as blackout.
- Identify the glass and frame
- Define privacy and viewing expectations
- Plan power, controls and cable access
- Check safety, coating and environment constraints
- Price fabrication, access and finish work separately
