The east-bench swing

A house on the upper benches above 1300 East takes direct sun from first light with nothing between it and the sky, heats through the morning, then loses the sun behind the Wasatch well before sunset. Rooms that were 80°F at three are cold at seven, and the furnace and air conditioner end up fighting each other inside the same day.

Solar film flattens the top of that curve. Rejecting the gain during the sunny hours means the house does not overshoot, so the evening drop starts from a reasonable number instead of a hot one.

Big glass in the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions

The subdivisions between 9000 and 11400 South built through the nineties and two-thousands went heavy on two-story entry glass, tall stairwell windows and great rooms with unshaded west walls. Those are the rooms Sandy homeowners call about — the ones with a hard heat line on the carpet and furniture that has faded unevenly.
