No shade, and nothing to hide behind

In Stansbury Park, Erda, Overlake and the newer parts of Tooele and Grantsville, houses sit on open ground with young landscaping. A street in an established neighborhood elsewhere on the Front has decades of tree canopy doing part of the work; here the glass is the only thing between the sun and the room.

That changes the specification. Rather than treating one problem elevation, we are usually looking at the whole envelope — west and south glass for heat and glare, and east glass for the morning spike and the UV load on floors and furniture.

Elevation adds to it. At roughly a mile up, there is less atmosphere overhead to filter ultraviolet than at sea level, so interiors take a heavier annual dose than the same house would in a lower, cloudier place.

Wind, dust and hard weather on the glass

The valley funnels wind, and wind here carries dust and grit off open ground. That is an argument for safety and security film on exposed elevations: it holds a pane together after an impact so the opening does not become a weather problem, and it does the same job for a hailstorm as it does for a break-in attempt.

It is also a reason to expect windows to need cleaning more often than film does. Once cured, filmed glass cleans normally with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner; there is nothing to reapply.

Warehouses, distribution and industrial frontage

The county’s commercial glass is a different shape from the rest of the Wasatch Front: distribution and light-industrial buildings along the I-80 corridor, offices attached to large floor plates, and street-level retail in Tooele and Grantsville serving a fast-growing population.

Offices in those buildings tend to have modest glass carrying a big load — a west-facing corner office in a metal building gets uncomfortable quickly. Solar control on the exposed panes, security film where the glass is at street level, and installs scheduled around shift patterns is the usual arrangement.
